The 5 R’s of Decluttering: Rubbish, Return, Re-home, Repurpose & Remain

  • by

Decluttering your home can sometimes feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What should you keep? What can be donated? And what on earth do you do with all those things you no longer need?

At Compassionate Home Clearing, we like to keep things simple by using our 5 R’s of Decluttering: Rubbish, Return, Re-home, Repurpose and Remain. These five categories can help make the decision-making process easier while also encouraging us to think carefully about where our belongings end up.

1. Rubbish

The first step is identifying the things that have genuinely reached the end of their useful life. Broken, damaged, expired or unusable items may need to be disposed of responsibly. Where possible, we always look for recycling or appropriate disposal options before sending something to landfill. There’s sometimes challenging items to dispose of such as chemicals but google council disposal options for direction on where to go.

2. Return

Sometimes clutter belongs to someone else! Perhaps you have borrowed an item, a family member has left something behind, or you have belongings that have simply found their way into your home. Returning these items to their rightful owner can instantly create more space.

3. Re-home

Just because you no longer need something doesn’t mean it isn’t useful to someone else. Furniture, kitchenware, books, clothing and household items can often be donated or sold. Re-homing items gives them a second life and keeps perfectly usable belongings out of landfill. Donating also adds joy to the process of decluttering or clearing as you are giving back to people and gives a feel good moment to what can be a challenging task.

4. Repurpose

Before getting rid of something, consider whether it could have another purpose. An old piece of furniture might be transformed, a sentimental item could become a keepsake, or something that no longer serves its original purpose might be useful elsewhere in the home. An example for us is turning sentimental hankies into pillow covers, this turns something you may not need into something practical.

5. Remain

Finally, we have Remain, the things you genuinely want, need and use. These are the belongings that earn their place in your home. They might be practical everyday items or treasured possessions that hold special memories.

Decluttering isn’t about getting rid of everything. It’s about creating a home that works for you and surrounding yourself with things that are useful, meaningful and valued.

The next time you’re tackling a cupboard, room or entire home, try the 5 R’s. A little structure can make the process feel much more manageable. Every item you thoughtfully sort is one step closer to a clearer, calmer home.
