When clearing a home full of valuable items, donating isn’t always the only option. Sometimes it’s worth exploring ways to make some money back from valuable pieces. Here are some of our tips, ideas and things to be aware of when trying to sell items.
Second-hand & Antique Dealers
These can be a great option for quality furniture, collectibles or antique pieces. If the home is full of valuables, it’s often easiest to have someone come out and do a valuation, or take photos into a dealer to get an idea of pricing.
One important thing to remember is that dealers need to make a profit too, so the amount offered is often lower than expected due to shop costs, transport and overheads. Also, most dealers will only take furniture in very good condition, so scratched or damaged pieces may be passed on.
Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace can be a great place to sell items directly. Some of our tips:
• Keep prices reasonable
• Include lots of information and clear photos
• Research similar items to see their current value
A few things to be mindful of:
• You’ll likely answer lots of messages and questions
• Be cautious of scammers
• Set yourself a timeframe — sometimes it’s better to donate an item than have it sitting there for years waiting to sell.
Garage Sales
Garage sales are officially back in business! They’re a fantastic way to move lots of smaller items in one day.
Some tips:
• Put signs up a few days beforehand (and don’t forget to take them down!)
• Have PayID or bank transfer details ready for people without cash
• Price items beforehand to avoid making up prices on the spot
• When someone negotiates, ask yourself: would I rather lose a couple of dollars or still have this item at the end of the day?
Cash Converters
These can be great for tools, appliances and electronics. Similar to second-hand dealers, keep in mind they won’t usually pay top dollar as they need to cover their own business costs and make a profit.
Selling can definitely be a tedious process, but if you have the time and inclination, we hope some of these tips help!
HAPPY SELLING!
