Decluttering immediately sounds like a daunting task and not one many of us are jumping out of bed to do it. Whether it is finding the task overwhelming, finding a starting point, letting go of personal belongings or simply making it a priority, it becomes very easy to make the spring clear out next year’s problem. But before we know it we’re moving boxes to get through the living room or making leaps through the bedroom to get through piles of belongings.
Decluttering doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Start small and pick one focus area, this can be one drawer or even one shelf. When going through these spaces ask yourself, do I use this item? Would I be fine without this item? If the answer is no, then consider whether you would donate, rehome, sell or discard it. Once you start with the little things, you’ll likely find that everyday tasks feel easier and your mind has a little more space to breathe.
It is always best to start in the room that is most utilised in your home, if you cook a lot it may be the kitchen or a young family with lots of toys it may be the living room. Once you find your groove you may begin to work through more spaces and this is when it can be an idea to clear a space in the home to organise piles into donate, rehome, sell or discard sections. Decluttering isn’t a task that takes a day so be patient with yourself, with your home and take lots of time to appreciate the little wins in your new, liveable space.
