As we all defrost from winter and start enjoying those gorgeous spring days, it’s no surprise that many of us begin looking around our homes and thinking about a spring clear-out.
Spring is often associated with fresh starts, making it the perfect time to tackle those cupboards, wardrobes, garages and spare rooms that may have been pushed to the bottom of the to-do list over winter. But while the idea of decluttering can feel exciting, actually getting started can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Our biggest piece of advice? Start small and simple!
You don’t need to declutter your entire home in one weekend. Choose one small area, drawer or cupboard and begin with the easy decisions. Expired food, broken items, empty containers and things that are clearly no longer usable can be a great place to start. Once you’ve gained some momentum, you can gradually work towards the more difficult decisions.
When you come across an item you’re unsure about, asking yourself a few simple questions can help:
- When was the last time I used this?
- Would I buy this again today?
- Do I actually need this, or am I keeping it because I feel like I should?
- Does this item serve a purpose in my life now?
- Am I keeping this because I genuinely love it, or because I feel guilty letting it go?
- Could someone else get more use or enjoyment from this?
These questions can be particularly helpful when working through sentimental belongings or items that have an emotional connection.
At Compassionate Home Clearing, we understand that decluttering isn’t simply about deciding what stays and what goes. For many people, belongings can hold memories, represent different stages of life or carry emotional significance. That’s why we believe the process should be supportive and, most importantly, your decision.
Some clients are more reluctant than others to let go of belongings, and that’s completely okay. Our role isn’t to force you to get rid of things or make decisions for you. Instead, we provide a calm and supportive environment where we can ask questions, talk through your options and help you feel confident in your choices.
Remember, decluttering doesn’t have to mean creating a perfectly minimalist home. It’s about creating a space that works for you and your life today.
So this spring, start small, take your time and celebrate the progress you make. Even one cupboard, one drawer or one room can be a great place to begin!
