How Long Does Decluttering Take? Your Decluttering FAQ

  • by

One of the most common questions we’re asked during an initial decluttering assessment is: “How long will this take?”

It’s a completely understandable question. When you’re looking at an overflowing wardrobe, a packed garage or an entire home that needs sorting, knowing how long the process will take can help you feel prepared.

The truth is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Every home, client and decluttering journey is different, and several factors can influence the timeframe.

How involved would you like to be?

Some clients prefer to be involved in every decision, while others would rather have us take the lead and only involve them when their input is needed. The level of involvement can make a significant difference to how quickly we can work through a space.

Are there sentimental belongings?

Decluttering sentimental items can take considerably longer than sorting everyday household belongings. Memories, photographs, gifts and belongings connected to loved ones can all require more thought and conversation. There’s no need to rush these decisions.

How quickly can you make decisions?

Decluttering involves making lots of decisions. What stays? What goes? Could someone else use it? Should it be donated, sold, repurposed or thrown away?

For some people, these decisions come easily. For others, they can become overwhelming, particularly when working through a large number of belongings.

How much time do you have available?

Your timeframe can also influence the process. Perhaps you’re preparing to put your home on the market, downsizing before moving into retirement living or simply wanting to create a more manageable home. Knowing your deadline helps us plan the work around your needs.

What about decision fatigue?

Making hundreds of small decisions can be exhausting. We always take this into consideration and understand that sometimes a break is exactly what’s needed. Decluttering isn’t a race, and taking your time can help you make decisions you feel comfortable with.

Ultimately, decluttering isn’t simply about how much stuff you have. It’s about the decisions that come with it, the emotions attached to belongings and the individual circumstances of each client.
